Through the story of a blind coffee roaster and the wisdom of the Desert Monastics, a reflection on how it may not be what we say, but how we listen, that matters most.
"Listen." That is the first word in the prologue of the Rule of St Benedict, the founder of monasticism in the West. I think he would approve of your column Jeremy...while sharing a cup of coffee!
Thank you for sharing your reflections. Some of what you seek - to be present in conversation without the urge to return the focus to yourself - develops with age. It is age-appropriate in one's 20's to desire and need affirmation and other input about ourselves from people in our lives. When others tell us whom they understand us to be, it helps us understand ourselves and build identity.
May you continue to be well, learn and grow, and embrace all that this monastic immersion offers.
Thank you.
It's a new idea for me: to practice detachment in conversation. I'll try. I'll practice. Thank you for this.
Thanks for reading!

Hi Jeremy,
I'm enjoying your Letters from the Monastery. They offer a great opportunity to reflect which is something we all could do more of.
I look forward to your next one.
Love Aunt Katie
